On September 9, 2010, Stephane Cossette made history by winning the first UCI ProTour event ever held in North America. Unfortunately he will not be defending his Challenge Sprint title due to new developments in 2011 exempting track specialists.

The Quebec City WorldTour Challenge Sprint elimination event pits 24 top-level racers, each a seasoned finish specialist with a combative streak, against each other over a one-kilometre distance. Eight heats of three competitors each will pare the field down to sixteen riders, who will immediately race in four-man quarter-final sprints, and so on until the ultimate victor is crowned.

The inaugural 2010 Sprint Challenge was won by Stephane Cossette (now Marinoni Cadence), followed by Remi Pelletier-Roy (now Garneau-Club Chaussures-Norton) in second and Dominique Rollin (now Française des Jeux) in third.

Cossette, a 22-year-old from Chicoutimi, QC, has some other impressive laureates under his belt, including an 11th place in team sprint and 19th in the 1km TT at the 2011 World Track Cup in Beijing, China from January 21-23, 2011.

Cossette also participated at the 2011 Pan Am Track Championships held at Medellin, Columbia from May 1—8, 2011.

The 2010 Canadian team pursuit champion still hopes to be selected for the London Olympic Games in 2012. Only time will tell …
